ABC Centers is the time of day that most students eagerly look forward to! It is a very active time in which students have the opportunity to work hands on with literacy materials. Students feel as though they are just ‘playing games’, but they are actually actively engaged in the learning process as they are thinking and doing! In our regular Kindergarten session, students participate in ABC Centers approximately once each week. ABC Centers may also be chosen during free choice time once introduced.
EDK students are assigned to one of four groups. Each group is also assigned to a color-coded table.

Over the years, my opinions on center management have changed a bit. Have you seen a transformation in your thoughts on this topic, too? Their language and literacy skills improve not only in the Library Area by reading or being read to and using flannel boards to retell stories, but also in the Dramatic Play Center where they draw and read menus at their restaurant or read recipes to cook for their children!
Materials available in each Interest Center should be changed occasionally so that children have access to a variety of materials over time.
